The Milwaukee Journal: Faces of Hope by Felicia Thomas-Lynn
'The students in Richard Stauber's fourth-grade class aren't quite the same.No longer is there constant bickering in the classroom, "mean-mugging" in the hallways or fights breaking out on the playground. Those vestiges of conflict seem to have melted away, replaced by respectful dialogue, peaceful problem-solving and a cooperative spirit. "We've all changed," said Takayla Adams, a 10-year-old at Westside Academy II. "We learned how to be polite and nice to each other. We learned how to be respectful." The turnabout in the students' behavior comes courtesy of the Peace Learning Center of Milwaukee, whose goal is to counteract negative peer pressure and the use of violence to resolve conflict....... |
